History is being challenged, hidden, and even erased like never before in our lifetimes. The mission statement of the Alliance for Texas History places us firmly in support of the full and complete telling of history based on diligent research that is gathered with integrity and communicated without fear or favor.

Article 3.8 of our by-laws states that “the Board, on its initiative or at the request of members, may produce public statements in the name of the Organization after careful consideration and only on issues that are within the purview of the Alliance’s mission statement.” To properly fulfill this critical duty, the Board has established a Committee on Public Statements along with a policy and procedure for reviewing such recommendations.

The Board has already taken action to endorse positions in alignment with our mission and values.

The Board of Directors of the Alliance for Texas History strongly condemns the firing of Thomas Alter, a tenured associate professor of history at Texas State University, and it calls for his reinstatement. The Alliance for Texas History supports the position of the American Association of University Professors, condemning these actions and calling for the reinstatement of Alter. The Board also urges the president of Texas State University to commit to upholding the First Amendment to the United States Constitution for faculty, staff, and students.

  • The pace and breadth of the direct censorship of people and events of history is unprecedented. The Alliance for Texas History endorses the Joint Statement on Federal Censorship of American History issued by the American Historical Association (AHA) and the Organization of American Historians (OAH).

  • This 1940 Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), originally developed 85 years ago, still stands as a beacon in today’s challenging environment.
